Haystack rock of Cannon Beach, Oregon

credit: I just stumbled upon this rock called Haystack Rock located in the coast of Oregon. It is a popular icon and a tourist centre especially for movie makers. The sea-washed sand on Cannon Beach makes a mirror image of the 235-foot basalt monolith known as Haystack Rock. Further reading... It might interest you to know that at low tide, holes and crags in the stone’s base become tide pools, a primary habitat for numerous sea creatures. At the rock’s high tide level is the abode of the sea birds like bald eagle, tufted puffins, and pelagic cormorants. See Credit Here:

Types of curves in Vertical Electrical Sounding

Types of curves in Vertical Electrical Sounding In Vertical Electrical Sounding, there are basically 4 types of curves but in real situations in the field, we usually encounter situations where these curves are merged to form a compound curve. ρ1 < ρ2 > ρ3      …...     K-type curve   (maximum type) Do you know the difference between schlumberger array and wenner?   ρ1 > ρ2 < ρ3      ……   H-type curve   (minimum type) ρ1 > ρ2 > ρ3      ……   Q-type curve (descending type) ρ1 < ρ2 < ρ3      ……   A-type curve   (ascending type) Some compound curves: ρ1 < ρ2 > ρ3< ρ4      ------ KH type ρ1 > ρ2 < ρ3> ρ4   ----- HK type

COMPARISON BETWEEN SCHLUMBERGER ARRAY OVER WENNER ARRAY

COMPARISON   BETWEEN SCHLUMBERGER ARRAY OVER WENNER ARRAY Find below the pros and cons of Schlumberger Array over Wenner Array and vice versa Are you a young geologist? Click HERE NOW!!! Advantages of using Schlumberger Array over Wenner                 It requires less manpower and time than Wenner soundings.                 It is less sensitive to lateral variations in resistivity. The potential electrodes are moved only occasionally; In a Wenner sounding the potential and the current electrodes are always moved after each measurement. It is faster in field operation. Types of VES Curves Requires less physical movement of electrodes than the normal Wenner array because only the current electrodes must be moved between readings. The effects of near surface, lateral inhomoge...

Vasquez Rocks

Have you heard of Vasquez Rock? Credit: The above picture will be alien except to those within the vicinity of Aqua Dulce, California or perhaps, those that have visited here at one time or the other. Just watch the arcs and the angles formed by this deposit!! In case you do not know, the image you are seeing is Vasquez Rocks. Am fascinated about the arcs and the acute angles formed by this deposit.. Your groundwater may be polluted!!! Nature is indeed wonderful!!!! For emphasis sake, this is in Aqua Dulce, California, north of Los Angeles. Research has it that the ‘arcs’ formed (i.e. tilting was as a result of the North American Plate collision with the Pacific Plate) along the San Andreas fault. We can see that the collision resulted in the uplift.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES AS A GEOLOGIST

Are you an undergraduate studying geology in any tertiary institution and bothered about what may become of you after graduation? Are you yet to enter the university perhaps to study geology but seems you do not know what and what you may be at the instance of your graduation? The truth is … you are in the right place. That is why you landed on this page!!! Be that as it may, Geology is the study of the history (and present) of the Earth. We will not delve much into this definition now. A geologist is one that studied geology. Are you a young Geologist and you want to know the problems usually encountered by them? The main aim of our discussion here is to throw light on the opportunities prevalent as a geologist. They include: Hydrogeologist / hydrologist Geochemist Geophysicist / seismologist Mudlogger Geoscientist Wellsite geologist Do you know the apparent resistivities of common rocks?? Economic geolo...

Source Rock for the World's Largest Oil Field

See credit here :: Add caption See credit here :: I was browsing and came across this. So I decided to share it to my readers. Happy reading!!! This outcrop is the  geologic type section  for the  Qusaiba Member , which is a primary  source rock  for the world's largest  oil field  ( Ghawar ). The  organic-rich shale  of the  Lower Silurian  Qusaiba Member, of the  Qalibah Formation , is one of the most prolific source rocks on the planet. It provides more than 90 percent of the  Paleozoic   light oil  and gas accumulations known on the Arabian Peninsula.

Groundwater prospecting using 2 L rods.

Groundwater prospecting using 2   L rods. In quest for sustainable water for man’s use, which dates back to life history on Earth, there has been a lot of tools /   gadgets for groundwater prospecting which ranges from the sophisticated to non sophisticated ones. In this post, we will be talking on groundwater prospecting using 2 L rods or fondly called ‘dowsing rods’. This rods / stick is made of copper or brass and shaped in the letter ‘L’. The smaller arm of each of the rods is held in both hands with a small distance of separation between the two hands. All the operator has to do is to walk round. The rods may come together (converge) or diverge. Convergence suggests a flow line.         How much do you know about Gaia's Hypothesis? DISCLAIMER!!!! Be that as it may, the author does not endorse it’s usage. It is only published here for knowledge sake. You are entirely on your own if you rely solely ...

Problems Usually Encountered In The Field By Young Geologists

Problems Usually Encountered In The Field By Young Geologists: Like other professions,   newbies in geology a.k.a Geo-newbies face some challenges in the field in the course of their mapping. However, it must be noted that this is not a strange phenomenon. It must also be noted that this does not mean they are unqualified or bags of wind. This is natural!!! Have you ever wondered want you may become after graduation? These difficulties are as a result of the spatial skills of these Geo-newbies, spatial nature of geological data and the inability of their teachers to transfer the knowledge effectively to them. Geo-newbies find it difficult to visualize geologic structures and outcrops in 3-D. This is very essential in the production of Geologic maps from topographic maps. In topographic maps, a lot of geologic information are hidden, but will now be x-rayed in geologic map. Take for example in geologic structures such as faults (both surface and subsu...

Gaia hypothesis

Gaia hypothesis It was put forward by a British Scientist, James Lovelock, in the late 1960’s. He proposed that the Earth is a self- regulating organism with its own life cycle. This hypothesis gave more understanding on how life remained on Earth. In his proposition: ‘Both the organic and inorganic components of Earth evolved together as one single, self-regulating system which can control global temperature and atmospheric composition to maintain its own habitability’. From this we came to understand that organisms (living and non living) existed and evolved together as a single, self- regulating system that has kept the earth habitable for life irrespective of natural threats.

Fundamental facts you should know about the earth

Fundamental facts you should know about the earth Still in the quest to perfectly understand the earth, it has made me to take a further dive into the earth study and I have come up with these: The Earth is about 4.6 billion years old: From the Big-bang theory, we have learnt that the earth came into existence as a result of collusion of solar gases and dusts which later solidified under solar gravity to form the earth. Evolution of life occurred in the Earth: Life evolved on this earth from the primitive life forms to the present day life ( angiosperms and Homo- sapiens ). These evidences are carefully preserved in the rocks. The Earth is always changing The surface of the earth as we know is directly under the influence of certain forces which alter / change it. These forces can be erosional, weathering, or tectonic / orogenic. So the fact remains that the paleo- surface of the earth is not the same as the present. Rocks mel...

THE GEOLOGICAL TIME SCALE [FULL DETAILS]

THE GEOLOGICAL TIME SCALE [FULL DETAILS] Credit: THE GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA How much do you know about the earth? The Geological Time Scale is a record of the developmental changes which has taken place over a period of billions of years in the Earth. It depicts the periods of remarkable developments in life (i.e evolution of life), evolution of oceans, basins and continents. Have you heard of Vasquez Rock? It is usually represented in the form: eras (eons), periods, epochs and ages. The Geological Timescale depicts major occurrences which is mostly global and regional. These occurrences are evident some of which include: a.       Orogenic   activities ( mountain building activities); b.      Mass extinctions (as in dinosaurs) and appearance of new species; c.       Continental drifting evidences; Certain species dominant in some places widespread glacia...
