This outcrop is the  geologic type section  for the  Qusaiba Member , which is a primary  source rock  for the world's largest  oil field  ( Ghawar ). The  organic-rich shale  of the  Lower Silurian  Qusaiba Member, of the  Qalibah Formation , is one of the most prolific source rocks on the planet. It provides more than 90 percent of the  Paleozoic   light oil  and gas accumulations known on the Arabian Peninsula.

In quest for sustainable water for man’s use, which dates back to life history on Earth, there has been a lot of tools /   gadgets for groundwater prospecting which ranges from the sophisticated to non sophisticated ones. In this post, we will be talking on groundwater prospecting using 2 L rods or fondly called ‘dowsing rods’. This rods / stick is made of copper or brass and shaped in the letter ‘L’. The smaller arm of each of the rods is held in both hands with a small distance of separation between the two hands. All the operator has to do is to walk round. Gaia hypothesis It was put forward by a British Scientist, James Lovelock, in the late 1960’s. He proposed that the Earth is a self- regulating organism with its own life cycle. This hypothesis gave more understanding on how life remained on Earth. In his proposition: ‘Both the organic and inorganic components of Earth evolved together as one single, self-regulating system which can control global temperature and atmospheric composition to maintain its own habitability’. From this we came to understand that organisms (living and non living) existed and evolved together as a single, self- regulating system that has kept the earth habitable for life irrespective of natural threats.
