Gaia hypothesis

Gaia hypothesis

It was put forward by a British Scientist, James Lovelock, in the late 1960’s. He proposed that the Earth is a self- regulating organism with its own life cycle. This hypothesis gave more understanding on how life remained on Earth.

In his proposition:

‘Both the organic and inorganic components of Earth evolved together as one single, self-regulating system which can control global temperature and atmospheric composition to maintain its own habitability’.

From this we came to understand that organisms (living and non living) existed and evolved together as a single, self- regulating system that has kept the earth habitable for life irrespective of natural threats.
